The 21 Turbo landed here in May 1988, badged 2L Turbo and offered only in saloon form with two-wheel drive. This was at a time when turbocharged cars were the thing to have; indeed, Renault was having great success with turbos in Formula One. Under the bonnet lay a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine developing a storming 175bhp.

Simply put, the 21 Turbo was born to strike fear among its competitors. The car faced severe competition from extremely formidable contenders and well-branded family saloons like the BMW 325i. Although some outrivaled the car due to its unorthodox aesthetics, Renault 21 still had a firm grip in maintaining competition.

The old technology was dropped and the new one adapted to new platforms, in other words. But the Renault engineers took this extremely commonplace and sensible practice to another level. When the 21 was unveiled in July 1986, it was available (on the French market) with a choice of a carbureted 1.7 or a fuel-injected 2-litre petrol engine.
